Student-Athlete Stories (Interview #1)

7/18/2016

Over the last few weeks, we've been doing interviews and collecting answers from current and past student-athletes to develop this - our 'Student Athlete Stories' segment.  We asked that the student-athletes be as descriptive, and as honest, as possible while answering so that their responses, experience, and knowledge could be used as context for current high school athletes that yearn to one day play at a college or university.  We've found that the insight and advice provided by their peers, and those student-athletes that have recently gone through the process, proves to be exceptionally valuable and supplements any advice that players have already received from their parents or coaches. These responses are intended to be used as a guide and reference-point for high school athletes looking to take the proper steps to prepare themselves for college life as an NCAA student-athlete.  Our first #StudentAthleteStory is from Jake Mellin, a baseball player for the University of Hartford:

Athletically, what was the toughest part about making the transition from senior year of high school to freshman year of college? >> "Getting into the lifting program our strength coach had for us."

And what about academically? >> "Managing time, and focusing in every class."

How did you select your college? Were you recruited? And if so, what was the recruiting process like for you?
>> "I was given a scholarship, and the recruiting process was stressful but fun."

What did you do to prepare yourself the summer before you went off to college for the first time? >> "I started lifting heavily, working out to condition my body for the college level."

In season, what was a daily routine for you? >> "Wake up, eat, and go to lift, class, class, practice, study."

What, if any, academic aide was available to you? (Did you have team tutors, mandatory study halls, etc).
>> "We had mandatory study hall and tutoring for those who needed it."

What tips do you have for students regarding time management? >> "Use your time wisely."

What advice do you have for high school students looking to play a sport in college? >> "Be prepared for it to be demanding, but it is the best time of your life."

Special thanks to Jake for providing us with these responses! If you are a high school student athlete who has questions regarding the college prep or athletic recruiting process, do not hesitate to contact us ([email protected]). We want to help you write your 'Student-Athlete Story'!
