Questions Parents Should Ask on a Prep School Admissions Tour

As a parent, do you know what you’ll want to ask on a boarding school admissions tour with your child?

To get you started, here is a solid list of questions that you could potentially ask when chatting with admissions officers, school reps, or coaches. Of course, you could ask variations of these, and perhaps what we've listed will spur you to consider other inquiries as well.

Can you describe the college prep process? How often does each student meet with the college counselors?
What is campus life like? How often are there holidays so that students may come home?

What is the town like where the school is located? (Which could lead to safety discussion, various entertainment available, etc).

What security and safety measures has the school taken to ensure students are protected?

What are the living conditions like? How does the roommate selection process work?

How would you rate the dining hall food? Is there ever a time where breakfast, lunch, and dinner may not be available?

Explain team travel - is food accounted for? What other adults, if any, travel with the team? How do students handle if they miss class time due to a sport?

What financial aid options are available? Can you please review the grants - academic and athletic - that may be offered?

What types of academic support is there?

Can you please talk about the campus health center? What medical services are available (if need be) in the surrounding area?
