A Dozen Ways Student Athletes Can Work to Have A Successful Summer

The school year has drawn to a close and as a student athlete you know one thing - you need to improve.

In order to compete it's a given that you'll have to get bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled.  And yes, to be a true student athlete you understand that you'll need to sharpen your study skills as well. Summer reading, eating right, days (and nights) in the gym, and practice, practice, and more practice will all work to ensure your next school year and sports season are the best that they can absolutely be.

What else can be done to prepare you to be your best next year? Check out LAC's 'Summer Dozen' below!

- Attend training/skills camps to hone the skills that you already have as well as teach you new ones.
- Speak with one of your advisers about enrolling in a summer course to get a jump on your academics.
- If you're heading to a new school, be sure to give yourself a tour of the campus to familiarize yourself.
- Register for the NCAA Clearinghouse if you have not yet done so.  By registering early you'll know exactly what classes you need to take in order to be eligible to play in college.
- Read the NCAA's Guide for Student Athletes cover to cover.  Then read it again.
- Consider ALL of your options (that includes Divisions 1, 2, and 3).  You never know...a school you never thought of may be the school that fits you best!
- Any specific questions regarding college sports that you cannot find, do not hesitate to contact the NCAA directly.
- Any specific questions regarding a particular college, do not hesitate to contact the school directly.  Questions you SHOULD be asking: What is the graduation rate of the athletes? What are common majors of the student athletes? Are tutors available? Do athletes have set study hall periods?
- If you're planning to do a tour with your family, do not come empty handed...instead, come with plenty of questions.
- Do NOT assume that you will get an athletic scholarship.  Instead, focus on, learn about, and apply for financial aid.
- Use the summer to come up with an academic and athletic plan for yourself...how are you going to get where you want to be?
- Spend time contacting schools and marketing yourself. (Or you could contact Leonard Andrew Consulting and let us work with you to find a school, and a team, that best fits you as a student, athlete, and person!)
